Woman pausing to think through a difficult decision about her divorce

Why You Can’t Decide What to Do About Your Divorce

You’re Not Confused. You’re Stuck.

I hear some version of this from clients almost every week: “I don’t understand why I can’t just decide. I’ve read everything. I’ve talked to my attorney twice. I know what my options are. I just… can’t make a move.”

One client said exactly that a few weeks into working together. She wasn’t confused. She could recite the options back to me better than most people who hadn’t lived it. What she was, was stuck — and those are two completely different problems that need two completely different fixes.

Why information alone doesn’t always get you moving

Part of what I do with clients is help them get the right information — understand their options, know what to actually ask their attorney, make sense of a process that can feel like it’s happening in a language you don’t speak. That matters. Good decisions need good information.

But having enough information was never going to be the whole answer for some of my clients, and it usually isn’t for anyone. You can have every fact lined up — the numbers, the timeline, the options laid out — and still sit there at midnight unable to hit send on an email, unable to pick a date, unable to make a move. That’s not a research gap. It’s what happens when nobody’s helping you turn what you know into something you can actually act on.

My client didn’t need a sixth conversation about the same three options. She needed someone to help her work out which one actually fit her life, and to explore if she missed anything with another possible option; not just to feel pushed into whichever option looked reasonable on paper.

Why the freeze makes sense

Divorce asks you to make some of the biggest decisions of your life — about money, about your kids, about who you’re going to be on the other side of it — often while you’re exhausted, blindsided, or still catching your breath from whatever got you here. Nobody makes clear decisions well from that state. That has nothing to do with your intelligence and everything to do with your nervous system. And can help you understand why your it’s not only your mind, but your body making you feel like you can’t decide what to do about your divorce

If you’re stuck, it’s usually because some part of you knows exactly what’s at stake. What to do with the house. A 401(k) split. A custody schedule. Whether the next five years look like the last five, or nothing like them. Of course you hesitate. That’s not weakness. That’s you taking this seriously.

What actually moved my client forward

We didn’t just add another list of options. We separated what she already knew from what she was afraid of — two things that had gotten tangled together into one big frozen feeling. Once she could see them as separate, the decision she’d been circling for weeks took one session to make.

Result: she went from “I’ve been stuck on this for a month” to signing the paperwork four days later — not because she learned something new that week, but because she finally had someone steady beside her, helping her use what she already knew.

How I actually help

This is the work I do with clients: helping you get the information you need, and just as importantly, helping you get calm enough and clear enough to actually use it.

That looks like working through the fear underneath why you can’t decide what to do about your divorce, building confidence in what to ask your attorney next, and finding an empowering and strategic way to communicate through the conflict without losing yourself in it. It’s decision-making support, not legal advice — I’m not your attorney, I’m the person who helps you move once you know as much as you can know.

If you’re reading this and something in it feels familiar — you’re not confused, you’re stuck — you don’t have to sort it out alone. Book your free 30-minute Divorce Fit Call with me and let’s talk about what ongoing support could look like for you.
